Internship Insights: Shaping the Supply Chain of the Future
Capacity started our summer internship program almost ten years ago with their first intern, Ed Shapiro.
Now, he’s our Senior Director of Engineering.
“Over a decade ago, we had our first Capacity intern, Eddie. While hard at work on his Engineering degree at McGill, he sought hands-on experience. Boy, did he find it! He joined us just as we were onboarding a massive candy company, Dylan's Candy Bar, and quickly found himself knee-deep in gummy bear counts late into the night. Eddie played a pivotal role in developing a new solution for a novel product type and managing a significant account for our business at the time.
Fast forward about a decade, and Ed is now our Senior Director of Engineering, leading a team of engineers, analysts, and interns.”

Since our first intern, Capacity has been dedicated to shaping the careers of future supply chain leaders through our internship program. In those 10 years, we’ve had dozens of interns join us for a summer of skill-building, hands-on learning, and networking. Many of these interns have gone on to become valuable members of our team.
Want to know more about the intern experience at a 3PL fulfillment company?
We sat down with a few of our bright, talented college students to get the inside scoop on their summer experiences. From day-to-day tasks to career insights, these interns shared their honest thoughts on what it's like to be part of our team.
Here’s what they had to say.
Keun Kim, Industrial Engineering Intern
I discovered my passion for industrial engineering through a documentary about how engineers tackled Disneyland's long wait times by creating the FastPass system. This opened my eyes to the field's versatility and the wide range of industries where I could apply my skills.
I was interested in the logistics/supply chain industry because it aligned well with the systems and work design principles foundational to industrial engineering. My coursework closely reflected a supply chain/logistics environment, making it a familiar starting point for my Industrial Engineering career.
I’ve really enjoyed my time at Capacity so far! I was pleasantly surprised by the close-knit environment that’s allowed me to not only interact with the engineers, but with forklift operators, technicians, site leaders, etc. Every new person I’ve interacted with has been so welcoming and curious about the work I’ve been doing, and always lend a hand when I have questions. I think it’s been useful to my major and career goals with some new technical skills I’ve picked up, along with the project management skills I’ve observed from the people in the engineering department.
Ava Levine, Industrial Engineering Intern
I initially entered Binghamton University as a biomedical engineering major, but I soon realized the career opportunities did not align with my evolving interests. The engineering college offered seminars for first-year students that provided an in-depth look at various engineering disciplines before declaring a major. During one of these seminars, I learned about the industrial engineering department and the diverse opportunities it presented, which resonated with my evolving interests at the time. Although I didn't have a specific path within the major in mind, I decided to switch to industrial engineering. While my interests have shifted from what they were initially, I am truly grateful for how my decision to pursue industrial engineering has positively impacted my academic and professional journey.
I was first drawn to the logistics field because of my statistics professor. Although his expertise didn't directly align with my interests, he demonstrated how fundamental statistical concepts can be used to forecast trends and drive decisions. After taking an enterprise systems course last fall, I became interested in understanding my role within a supply chain. This class sparked my curiosity about the process an online order goes through after it's placed. Through my time at Capacity, I learned that the order fulfillment process is far more complex than it seems.
I've had a great time working at Capacity. The work environment is incredibly supportive, and I've found it easy to connect with and learn from colleagues. I've witnessed firsthand how the projects I've contributed to have positively impacted the company. In terms of my major, this internship has allowed me to further develop my skills in Tableau, Excel, and AutoCAD. This summer has not only solidified my interest in supply chain and logistics but also demonstrated how my skills can be effectively utilized in this field.
Lessons Beyond the Desk
Our Summer Internship Program is not just about professional experience. It's a time for personal growth, for forging new friendships, and for learning from seasoned professionals. Our finance, industrial engineers, and operation interns immerse themselves in collaborative projects that not only enhance their technical skills but also foster their leadership and teamwork abilities.
“Each summer, we welcome a new group of ambitious and talented interns. These interns rotate through various departments, including Engineering's planning, pricing, and safety teams. Others contribute to Finance or Marketing. Impressively, we extend full-time employment offers to several interns each year upon graduation, and many have accepted and joined our team. It's a remarkable way to cultivate a pipeline of skilled, enthusiastic young professionals eager to explore their desired career paths.”

As the summer comes to an end, we hope that our interns have not only contributed to meaningful projects and gained invaluable industry insights, but that they also formed a network of support, guidance, and friendship that will extend far beyond the duration of their internships.
